The brewery was founded in 1708, when it was still called Stiegenbrauerei. However, the brewing craft in Zwettl was established many decades earlier by the Cistercian monks. In 1890, the brewery became the property of the Schwarz family, who still run the brewery today. In recent years, a lot has been invested in new infrastructure and technology to keep the brewery up to date. Zwettler is also concerned about the environment and was the first brewery in the country to undergo an eco-balance, which makes it possible to work in a very sustainable manner.
