Tenuta San Guido
A wine from the rocks. The 1968 vintage saw the debut of Sassicaia, a courageous wine that at the time, broke away from the standard way of making Tuscan Wine. The wine is named after the stony soil which it comes from, and, by its nature, is destined to go far.
The vineyard's soils boast diverse terrain with limestone, marl-rich patches, pebbles, and some clay. Production occurs at 80 to 400 meters altitude, facing west/southwest. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine ages 20 to 25 months in French and American oak barrels, determined by the vintage's seasonal pattern.

Originally, Sassicaia was never meant for the market. It began as an experiment. In 1944, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, scion of a Piedmontese noble family, planted Bordeaux grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc – in the village of Bolgheri in Maremma. Thriving in the warm southern Tuscan region, these grapes were intended for the family and friends' everyday enjoyment. However, Nicolò, the current head of Tenuta San Guido and Mario's son, urged his father to introduce Sassicaia to the public. In 1968, the wine made its first appearance on the market.
